Got down to Belfast tonight to @IaaAstro meeting. Lecture was about formation of solar systems. Prof Tom Ray from Dublin was the speaker.
I really enjoyed the section on using infrared astronomy to penetrate into dust clouds like the horsehead nebula to see new star formation beneath.
Bit disappointed to learn that globular clusters are so old that they havent been seeded with heavy elements by supernova explosions and hence dont have planets – pity, always fancied living in a globular.
Also fascinating to see HST images of jets of matter being ejected along the polar axes of protostars to conserve angular momentum as (rotating) matter falls in from the accretion disk.
Overall a great evening #IaaAstro folk were very warm and welcoming. JP
